Hi Wayne,

Very comprehensive post indeed about finding an accountant. The question, I think, especially for many entrepreneurs who start very small with a business on the side, is when you need to bring an accountant on. For businesses that start earning very little, even paying for an accountant may be more expense than they can justify. Your thoughts? What's a good metric to know when your business needs accounting help?

Thanks Heather. It's a good question.

Accounting software, especially those made with small business owners in mind, are getting easier to use and this does prolong the need to even start thinking about hiring a full time accountant.

The are three indicators to look out for. The first will be how much time a business owner is spending on the accounts. If the transactions are getting to a point where you are spending more time entering them into the accounting software than working on other crucial areas of your business, it's time to hire.

Secondly, if you don't like accounting or you are not good at doing it, let someone else who is better at it do the job.

Of course, like what you have mentioned, you should also look at whether you can afford an accountant. A full time accountant is expensive and you might not have sufficient work for him or her. Hiring on a freelance or part time basis or even working with an accounting firm are great ways to free yourself up from mundane accounting tasks with a much lower cost.
