Recruiting new staff for the home and residential care sector has always been a challenge, and it’s certainly not one that will get any easier over the next five or ten years. The ILC, a think-tank which advises government on the impact of longevity, aging and population change, has reported that the adult social care sector in England will need to add approximately 1 million workers by 2025 in response to population ageing.

If the situation were rosy today that might not be such a challenge, but as it is the care sector is already struggling to recruit and retain staff. Nearly 1 in 20 (4.8%) of positions in adult social care in England are currently vacant, that’s nearly twice the vacancy rate in UK’s labour force as a whole (2.6%).
