From the perspective of a business owner or manager, I can see the advantages of cross training, however having been on the employee side of the equation, I can tell you that employees almost always feel devalued by it. They feel there is no additional money and more effort required just to keep in place, like treading water without getting ahead--actually swimming. This is usually for low end work, where workers are often not compensated properly. On the high end, I'm thinking there's a whole different mindset. There it's about adding value to oneself as an employee and for the company. But for people making under $20 an hour I'm thinking that you're going to have to offer a whole lot of other incentives if there's no additional money.
