For many service and Internet-based businesses, the company’s website is not only an important sales tool, but it is the primary identity and key distinguishing feature that the company has in its competitive marketplace. As a result, it makes sense to protect that identity and distinguishing feature to the greatest extent possible. The last thing a business wants is for a competitor to attempt to siphon off its goodwill, and then find out that its remedies are limited as a result of the omission of a key (but relatively simple and inexpensive) aspect of a basic intellectual property protection strategy.

While “common law” copyright protection is automatic, federal registration with the U.S. Copyright Office provides substantial important additional protections that are not afforded to unregistered works.
