Caron: You are right about that. Personally, I want to learn about any hashtags for the event, as an attendee. I then could comment on the event and give shout outs to the exhibitors! ;)

You could certainly engage with social media before and after, but this blog is targeted at attendees - not exhibitors, who probably get more from social media marketing than someone who's just there to learn and speak to vendors.
