This was useful. Marketing is probably the most difficult thing we have to mull over at our startup, and this was some good advice. We're sticking to inbound marketing for now, because we haven't had good experience with paid advertising in the past.

I like the "bulky mail" tip. We will use this outreach activity for our new online venture with t-shirts. What is the max. dollar value for goods, you could send to a news media outlet, without crossing the line?

I liked the "bulk mail" tip as well- makes the outreach seem more 'substantive' and less likely to be chucked in the trash right off the bat. Seems like there's no blanket amount that would be considered bribery- but keys seems to keep it at the trinket level. And always good to provide something that the receiver can use in their daily life (keeps your brand/service on their mind any time they use it!)- I have a collection of branded small notebooks that I've picked up along the way and use them to take notes all the time.
