I'm not convinced of the value of exit intent pop-ups. When you're one click from closing the tab/window why would you go back and enter your email? Earlier is better imho.

The idea behind an exit intent popup is to use a different approach to convert the visitor. So if you're looking at making him sign up for a product trial, you could instead first offer a demo.

It is basically a way for you to retarget with a 'similar' message as on your website. That's what holds the person back!

For example, if you liked a few products from an ecommerce store, but are abandoning them and the website offers you an additional off just when you leave, you're bound to reconsider leaving. :)

Vanhishikha: I still have an issue with pop-up boxes in all forms, but your post is making a good case on how you could do it in a better way.

In case you do want to try out these different strategies, do sign up on Exit Bee. We could give you an entire month free for using the technology, and you'll know that popups are not bad, it is the strategy that often causes them to backfire.
