I think step 1 is really key. You need to understand why you want to engage in social media and what you want to get out of it. Without it you will be just shooting in the dark and waste your effort.

Harry: I agree with you. You have to answer the "why" question. Simon Sinek is a making a strong case about this issue in his book and TED talk.

That's why I thought this post had a valid point to be commented on.

That's a really mediocre article. What you are describing is not particularly social media, it's generally what you do in marketing.

Great short and sweet introduction to social media. Things to tinker about. I am using the P.O.S.T formula (from the Groundswell book) for getting started with clients and their social media activities.
