You are not a lunatic...you make perfect sense.

You have to give away things. But make sure you don't give away too much. A year ago I went to the supermarket to get things for lunch. They were giving away a lot of free samples. I had several cheese and crackers. A tofu sample. A small bowl of macaroni and cheese. A glass of wine. And several pieces of cake. I was so full after the free samples that I left without buying anything.

That is a very insightful observation and a very good metaphor to explain how it should not be done. I agree with you , giving away too much reduces the value of the product and the brand as a whole and that would defeat the purpose of giving away the knowledge , since our primary intention was only to build brand presence and authority ....
