It seems that the whole focus about marketing these days is on marketing tactics, especially social media. Could imagine what Apple would look like today if they just focused on tactics for the Apple Mac and not looked at developing new products or services like iPad?

Adam leaves the kind of comment I'd like to be able to leave - intelligent.

(But I can't.)

Hi Susan,

Vert important point.

I think some of the confusion for small business owners is stemming from the fact that so much emphasis is being placed on having a social presence in particular. It's being touted by many business and marketing experts as a do or die tactic. These business owners are pouring an inordinant amount of time, energy, and money thinking it will be the holy grail that will save their businesses.

But often, if these tactics are disconnected from proper business management, development, and where appropiate, innovation then it only makes matters worse.

Marketing tactics of any kind will typically be successful if the product/service is unique/extraordinary and basic marketing skills and knowledge exist *or* the marketing tactics are either so on target or so unique that they can turn the ordinary into the extraordinary. In both cases, however, businesses owners *still* need to be in touch with the realities of their product/service as well as their target market(s).

I agree with you Adam and it is a shame to see business owners do it. Perhaps another reason is the marketing expert has expertise in a particular tactic and doesn't have the skills and experience in all aspects of marketing and those following their advice do not realise the implications of just following what they say.

I have seen a marketing tactic, a TV ad initially have huge success for a brand. Unfortunately the product did not live up to expectation and there was no repeat purchase.

Thanks for adding these points.

Susan
