The power of the Apple brand never ceases to amaze me. The iPhone 4 launched today, and loyal Apple fans rushed to be among the first to have the newest generation of iPhone...

Agreed there's tons to learn here. Martin's point about supply chain management is also a good one. I think the important thing is to learn from the brand building potential here while realizing success for our businesses may be completely different. In this respect, the key thing to learn from Apple is that some people will love you fanatically, some people won't and you only need to worry about you're fans, not so much the people who don't get it.

One interesting aspect of Apple's success is how great they are at supply chain management. AMR Research ranked Apple number 1 this year as last year.

Thing is, Pat, it only needs to be a strong brand for the people who love it. For the rest, it's just a residual cultural phenomenon. I don't use Apple products generally. (I can hear the gasps!) The price tag just isn't worth it for what I do. That doesn't say I'll never use an Apple product. It all depends. But right now, I'm not too important to Apple's future and am not much of an evangelist for them. But I'm sure they don't care. There are plenty of others who are. See, I think we have to get off the need to compare our businesses to a pop culture phenomenon like Apple. What's important is that our brand is strong and communicates to our customers.

Shawn- I agree that there's no need to compare ourselves to Apple's brand, but that doesn't mean we can't learn anything by watching them do business. I also agree that many of their products are overpriced, but the amount of brand loyalty they've generated allows them to charge those prices.
