I don't think it's a case of either or but then perhaps that's very much the message of you post. I see many ways that the traditional and new can be integrated and mixed together to make both more effective.

This is a great post! The social media bandwagon reminds me of the .com boom (then bust), everyone straining to get into it, forgetting some of the basics about business, and in this case, marketing.
