Ross: Do you have any names of rural small businesses? Maybe we should ask Becky McCray (Small Biz Survival)? :)

Yes, Zappos with their happiness philosophy is a great example.

I reached out to Becky and she suggested the following as a recent example: http://smallbizsurvival.com/2014/04/two-business-lessons-from-a-small-town-store.html

Becky's Small Biz Survival blog (www.smallbizsurvival.com) is an outstanding read - not only for rural small business owners, but for small business owners everywhere.

Couldn't agree more. Front line employees play a big role in attracting and retaining customers for any business. Excellent tips in how to make sure they are doing the right things to keep those customers happy.

Front line employees for sure. In fact, in some companies (my company, crowdSPRING included), ALL employes play a big role in working with customers. Even our engineering team takes weekly turns as part of our customer service team.

I like the advice: " Stay off-script." You should know what to say in a natural way, not in forced way. Some telephone sales people have a problem with this...

Could you mention some small business that are good at "enjoying their customers for profit and fun"?

Many rural small businesses have great relationships with their customers and are great examples in an answer to your question. Among bigger companies, Zappos comes to mind.
