I wonder how much this applies now that Google has turned the online world upside down with its recent Penguin update. These days it seems that having directory links can actually *hurt* your search ranking, and it hasn't been so clear whether Google is making distinctions (at least not right now) between quality, human-edited directories and those spammy, automated ones.
