We know customer service is important in marketing your small business. It is one of the key elements that can help you compete successfully against many larger businesses. However, in certain circumstances it can be a big waste of your time and money.

I really agree with this post, Susan, and I think the point sometimes is what you are doing to grow your business as much as it is what you are doing for the customers you already have. This doesn't mean you should do poor work for existing customers, but unless you're in a business in which you need only a few clients to make a profit you must focus on growing your business first and foremost. You can do more for customers who do more for you but ultimately it is not a one way street.

My old training at J&J still holds true today and it was a good reminder. Look at constantly innovating and improving your products or services, making sure the improvements are in line with customer expectations etc. Otherwise you will never be ahead of your competition and meeting the needs and desires of your customers.

Sometimes it might be a good idea to ignore all the hype.
