In today's post John Jantsch covers the idea that free content is hurting us all. He believes that: We’ve swung so far over to the “information wants to be free” thinking that I believe it’s presenting a challenge for businesses and content consumers and the Web in general.

SarahJantsch,

I like this article a lot and think it has many valid points. But I also think that free is a good thing and it doesn't have to erode value.

My example would be the good old library. It's free. It has a lot of value. And it has done nothing to eliminate bookstores or amazon.com. You may have to wait a while to get your hands on the newest bestseller though. The only downfall, as you have no doubt seen on Seinfeld, is that book you didn't return decades ago.

As far as free content watering down social communities, I think Bizsugar proves the hypothesis wrong. Once the spam is eliminated there remains a pretty good selection of quality material.

R.
