Facebook announced what can clearly be called a “me too” location check in function yesterday, but hey, when you have half a billion people using something, even a copied innovation can have huge immediate impact. Facebook Places is a smart-phone location check-in feature that allows users to share their location, find the location of their friends, and discover new places based on other Facebook user recommendations – much like Loopt, Foursquare and Yelp! provide.

I think that Gowalla will be able to stick around. They have neat features like adding photos and you receive "badges" for different achievements. The thing is how you connect the virtual thing with the physical locations. I hope we will see more interactions in the future, e.g., meetups with Gowalla users, small business owners taking part in the "game", giving out freebies to loyal customers. It would be interesting to read stories about this. It is a pretty new phenomena in Europe yet.

Yet, I do wonder what effect this will really have on the other communities. Facebook is huge, irresistibly so, but it is still not the whole market and attempts by larger companies to copy such innovations aren't always successful.

Facebook is offering a service that is almost identical to that of Foursquare and Gowalla, however, what Facebook has is largescale brand recognition. Just the fact that Facebook is now on board with location based marketing and technology makes it an important aspect of marketing. Too bad it will undoubtedly harm the real innovators, Foursquare et al.
