Great tips. Also remember to only use press releases when you actually have something newsworthy to announce. Issuing a press release every day because you changed the background color on your website isn't going to get reporters to remember you in a good way - it may just make them skip reading any future press releases from you.

Cate,

Yes, this is an important point! Misuse of press releases will definitely have diminishing returns. It's kind of like spam in the online content world. Communicating simply as part of a trick to attract attention will not win you friends. Make sure there is value in every communication you send out, and real news in every press release.

Mark,

Great tips. Somewhere in here an important point to remember is to get to the news or get to the point quickly--as in immediately! Readers (including members of the media) will likely decide after a glance at your release whether they want to give it any further attention. Catchy headlines are great but, especially in the case of a press release, it's more important to explain in a few words exactly what you are trying to communicate so that the reader can decide whether it's relevant or not to their needs.

Thanks for the comment Heather

Online Press Releases are indeed a great source of content distribution, you re right a catchy headline may not work here as the media is different. The release needs to explain the context in a few words.
