Bounce Rate. What is it, and why is it important?

Bounce Rate is a measure of visit quality and a high Bounce Rate generally indicates that site pages aren't relevant to your visitors. But there's more to it than that.

How could you figure out if the bouncing has been caused by a real visitor, or only a robot passing by?

For a start Google Bounce rate as measured in Analytics includes people who searched in google and then clicked. Bounce rate as shown in ads reporting like Adwords or Facebook for example) are for people who clicked that ad. This would exclude bots.
