I think that's the real point here. Forget whether at this moment site load time will effect your Web ranking directly. It will definitely effect your site indirectly. No one wants to wait for a slow loading site or to link to it and put their readers through a wait. So consider how this lack of links and a lack of visitors may effect your ranking over time.
