In 2013, will you continue to invest marketing efforts and dollars in your Facebook business page? We small businesses have gotten accustomed to a free platform to gather and network with fans. Heads up, Facebook page marketing is changing.

To answer Peg, it depends on the budget first & post content too (podcast, or post) plus I'm sure the headline and content I use to describe play a role. I would say that generally the exposure exceeds what they promise, but not always.

How would you all respond to this person, who posed this question on my Facebook for Business page on FB. https://www.facebook.com/pages/Facebook-For-Business/15850174449

"I decided to give the Promoted Post a go yesterday. my business page has around 680 fans - but my posts only ever reach around half of that (at most). And so I paid £10 to reach between 400 and 750 (fans only, not their friends).

I paid for and posted the update at around 7pm last night. It's now 12 hours later and the promoted post has only reached 282 of my fans (compared to the previous, unpaid for post) which reached 223.

Can anyone explain why the reach was so poor, when I paid to guarantee a much higher reach - i.e the whole point of Promoted Posts."

Hi Peg... I ran a promotion yesterday for 5 bucks. As of today I've only had it reach 96 people for a cost of 92 cents. The data in the text box indicates the promotion will end by Friday at 2:08 AM. Normally it ends much sooner than they first project, but it does give a "period" that the promotion will run.

TCwatson, I asked her to report back in 48 hours with real numbers. A full week? I did not know exposure lasted that long.

The short answer is that they don't guarantee them within such a small window. You may have to let the promotion play out over several days, up to a week maybe.

I "grudgingly" pay to promote certain posts. Though I can't knock them for wanting to make a buck, I view it as I ALREADY paid my dues to their bottom line by learning the ropes advertising on their site to get the fans in the first place. To have to "pay again" to speak to those who signed up annoys the living daylights out of me. To Edwards point, I agree that most don't give a crap about my content. I'm sure I have some die hard fans, and I am grateful to them, but most are casual at best. I see FB a "little backwards" to most. I use my fan base to "help validate" my company. When people land on that page and see over a 1300 fans it helps me overcome a barrier some may have to doing business with someone they never heard of. Anyway... enjoyed the post!

Thanks for weighing in, Tcwatson. If your unpromoted posts were seen by about x, and your promoted posts were seen by y, what percentage additional exposure did you gain by promotion?

Honestly, I think promoting your FB page is a waste of time and money. Sure, you could get a ton of likes, but do they really give a sh*t about what you have to say? Probably not. I find it much more effective to place a simple like box or button on my blog / website. This way, "likers" already know exactly what to expect from me because they're used to my style of writing / communicating. Anywho, enjoyed the read. Keep up the good work!

Best,

Edward

I appreciate your frankness, Eglassman88. And thanks for the compliment. Certainly likes for individual content are more genuine. I suspect FB will shortly be selling us the emails of those Likers, so they may in fact be worth something as a vague indication of interest.

Anytime! I agree with you in that aspect, but overall I just think they're a bad investment. :)

There are certainly plenty of people who agree, Edward! I think ultimately it comes down to what you are using Facebook for. "Likes" by themselves are valueless unless you can use them to spread your message further, like by using "likes" to make sure your posts appear in more newsfeeds, for example. Thanks for commenting on BizSugar!

Tcamba, are you paying to promo your posts or not? Do you have under or over 400 Fans. I'm very interested in individual page owners experience.

My Facebook "likes" really influence the buying attitude of my customers. Facebook is growing and so is my business. Thanks for sharing!
