One of the most important keys to getting good placement in search engines is to get other websites to link to your site. Some of the techniques being used by online marketers and unscrupulous link-building "businesses" will build nothing but animosity for your business. Whether you do your own link-building, have one of your employees do it, or outsource it to a link-building or SEO firm, make sure your link-building campaign steers clear of these five deadly link-building sins.

Solid advice, but finding good links isn't really that hard. Tools like LotusJump even automate the finding for you and after that it's just a matter of using a little creativity and time.

So far I've only received the spam type through comments.

The only requests that I consider are the the ones that come in through email and address me by name. My own method, but it works for me.

Thank you. That was actually a really helpful article. I knew that I needed back links for my blog and business but now I also know what to avoid doing!

I agree and I would go even further to say link soliciting or link exchanging in general should be avoided. It's of dubious value, it's ridiculously expensive if you actually run the math for how much you get paid for how much time you spend per link, and you have to keep checking if the other person is holding up their end of the bargain. It's a time sink.

These are really good tips -- thanks, Janet, for providing them.

These are all good things to steer clear of, but honestly, when it comes to SEO and blogging, you can't let yourself be paralyzed by fear. Try your best to be honest in your link building strategy and learn as you go. Some mistakes are based on ignorance so simply do the best you can.
