White papers are not longer a 'geeky' technical communications medium reserved for men in white lab coats. Today every company from Agriculture to Zone Planning has discovered the power of the white paper medium to educate, inform, convince, and generate new opportunities with both business and technical professionals.

But as waves of new white papers appear on corporate websites, search engines, libraries, and document sharing sites, a certain level of 'sameness' seems to be creeping in . Driven in large part by the current economic climate and the need for cost containment, many companies are choosing to produce small white papers, between 3-5 pages in length, containing nothing more than paragraphs of black text on a white background.

So when your competitor issues their 'all-text' white paper, what will you do to counter it? This post on the White Paper Pundit blog gives you five ways to make your white paper 'stand out' in what has become an increasingly crowded field of white paper 'sameness'. I hope you enjoy it, and I welcome your feedback!

Thanks for your feedback. I'm glad you liked it. As companies are using price as the sole basis for their white paper content, many are forgetting about effectiveness. Saving money is great but if it doesn't generate reader attention its a waste of those limited budget dollars.

Jonathan,

Even if these points are for white papers, they actually got me thinking about all marketing materials. As a small business owner I actually find these points inspiring.... to always market with the best content you have. When things get busy, it's easy to focus on the subject matter and how this fits in within a marketing plan and forget to step back and look at the overall package.

I recently heard that Seth Godin said he will not read a PDF that could have been written in a word processing software.

This makes a lot of sense to me and supports your points 2 & 3.

Creating interest is important with any printed information from a white paper to a blog to a news article or mailer. Readers can be intimidated by great ponderous blocks of print and are rightly disinterested in poorly organized information.

I like this article and have bookmarked it. It's an easy read -- yet conveys good information about white papers. Great for any B2B marketer.
