Over time, a blog post can rank in the search engines for long tail keyword searches by people that are looking for specific information. It’s a great way to get traffic to your site. The points you mention are all cases of what not to do when it comes to blogging. In that respect, I agree, it's similar to other marketing: blog badly or give up too soon and it could damage rather than help.

Nick, I think the key is to add value, pure and simple. Even after all these years, I think a lot of business people still don't get blogging--they think it's either got to be too personal or that it's gimmicky and there's nothing in between. In one of my business classes (I'm in college) that's taught by an older professor, it's like he's had his head in the sand all this time. They're still teaching business the old fashioned way, and this is at a good private college.
