To answer your question, Heather, yes and no. It does limit your ability to scale if you're a one-trick pony and can't embrace the possibility of offering multiple services under your banner. However, if you do decide that you're willing to hire others who can help you expand your limited bouquet of offerings, it can help you scale much faster. At least, that's what I believe.

Hi Priya,

Thanks for your thoughtful response. I agree that expanding a customized service business is possible, though certainly more challenging than scaling a business that offers a more limited range of services. I like your use of the word "bouquet" here. I think that's an apt way of thinking about a more nuanced business where additional services can be added by building a diverse team with a variety of complementary talents as opposed to creating an assembly line service where every client is treated the same. So glad to have you participating here on BizSugar!

Hi Priya,

Meeting a client's specific needs certainly sets you apart in a market full of competitors that simply offer standard services with limited opportunity for customization. But do you feel this very personal approach can also limit your ability to scale? In other words, how do you systematize such a customized service?
