It's an interesting question, Sherryl, probably with many answers. The rule of thumb you hear from gurus is that if you use your blog to promote another business, say consulting for example, you shouldn't put lots of ads on it. In other words, you should choose the kind of business your blog is and stick with it. But I think this is too simple to be true. When you launch a blog, hopefully on a topic about which you are passionate but also one for which a market exists, I think you may want to use the conversation you start having with your community/audience/followers about the kinds of products or services they may need. You can use a blog as market research to create your business too, but even so I think it's best to treat it as a business from day one.
