Stephen Nold lists his top five benefits of social media. I would agree with all of these and add that these benefits result not only from use of big social media and bookmarking sites like StumbleUpon and Digg but also and ESPECIALLY from using niche sites like bizSugar where your chances of being heard and having your submissions ranked highly in a more intimate, specialized group is much greater. When contributing and trying to get the most out of the experience, remember some basics:
1. Share links to other posts not just your own. Remember, social media involves give and take so don't look like you're only trying to attract attention to yourself.
2. Vote. Vote. Vote. Remember, contributors can see who voted for their submissions and may return the favor not to mention visiting your profile to find more about you and possibly clicking through to your Website or blog.
3. Make plenty of comments. The best results come from clicking through to the original story and reading it completely. The reasons for commenting prodigiously are the same as those for voting. (See above)

Shawn,

Very good advice on how to use social media sites. How much time and energy do you spend on social media sites during a work day?
