I understand that people could think about the word in that way, but I am here to guide them in right direction! :)
It is important to understand the true meaning of a word and that you are able to defend the concept. I call myself a rational egoist in my Twitter profile. It should be enough to write the word egoist, but I want to get rid off any misunderstandings.
If you want to have a clear explanation of the difference between egotism and egoism, read the introduction to Ayn Rand's novel, The Fountainhead.

Great tips. As I understand the philosophical meaning of a true ego (I in Latin), I have to comment on your statement: "Cater to your audience, not your ego"
You have to start with yourself and understand your "why", before you could cater to your audience. From my site, Ego Sole Trader:
"My work as a social media enthusiast and "Trader in Matter & Spirit," is to provide moral and practical support to sole traders (sole proprietorship), solo entrepreneurs and business-minded individuals.
I help businesses use new media to boost their supply and value chain. I guide business leaders with an integrated approach based on a rational business philosophy. Your goals should be your concretized values."
