You can start using emojis in your email headlines today, but make sure it’s something your audience will like and/or appreciate. You could also ask your clients whether using emojis is something they expect of you or if they’d be surprised to see coming from you.

Interesting thought, but I think the general standard does exist even if it's not written or officiated, and I think that's where the beauty of emojis is. Wikipedia says that inspiration for creating emojis came from weather forecast symbols used to show weather and Japanese manga stock symbols used to express emotions. If you take smiley face, for example, it will always be the same :) - if that were somehow standardized more than that, each platform that uses emojis would have the same emojis. Not to say that's a bad thing as far as standardizing goes, but then all the platforms wouldn't have that additional factor that differentiated them from everyone else.

Sean: Ah, a big mouth smiley! Your post made me look on my iPhone keyboard: Svenska (Swedish), English (US) and Emoji. So many emoticons and so little time! LOL! ;) Could you find an official emoji site with descriptions of the different icons?
