Author and marketer Seth Godin and entrepreneur Richard Branson talk about recession marketing strategies. Though both of these guys certainly market and help operate much bigger companies now, both started small and the advice Branson gives is no different for a small business than it would be for an aerospace empire. Even during tough times, Branson advocates keeping your company's name out there and finding creative ways of explaining what you do.

Yep, their name recognition certainly makes it easier for them to make a noise about their companies than it is for startup entrepreneurs and small business people who try to do the same. But I still think there's an important lesson to be learned here. And that lesson is about persistence. You see, like every business person starting out, both these titans once had much less recognition than they do today. That recognition and the large revenue streams they now enjoy are the result of steady building over years. The important point in any business is to stay alive long enough for the cumulative effects of that effort to pay off. To do so, it's important to keep your business in the minds of potential customers in any way you can. We're all limited only by our imaginations, not by our pocket books.

I am a fan of both Seth and Sir Richard. However, what do they know about recession marketing in a way that is relevant to my business? They're both big celebrities. The money probably keeps rolling in no matter what the economy is doing, when you're a bazillionaire or a big name. Not so for us little people. :-(
