What is a 404 Page? You’ve seen them plenty of times. They’re the pages you land on when you’ve entered a web address incorrectly or gone to a page that has been removed.

They can be boring, like this one…

Bad-Boring-404-Page

Quite frustrating really. You’re hoping to get some information you need and you end up there.

This is not only frustrating for you but also a wasted opportunity for the owner of the website.

This is a great article, since it's not often that people think about 404 pages and yet it seems clear that they can be reclaimed and turned into something great. Wouldn't have thought of this, so thanks for the insight and clever example.

I know you could tie in your 404 page to analytics to track certain conversion paths. I think the most important thing to remember with a 404 page is that the user is lost. Help them find what they need first. Fun, sales and marketing goals will come second. In my opinion. :-)

I like what Tumblr does when a page can't be found. It's pretty down-to-earth and cute.

Jon: Do you know about 404-pages that have lead to additional business?

I've seen many innovative things done with a 404 page. I think that it's best used as a resource or list building page.
