The term "business development" means different things to different people. For purposes of this article, I will use Scott Pollack's definition of business development from his article in Forbes: Business development is the creation of long-term value for an organization from customers, markets, and relationships.

This definition encompasses marketing, sales, branding and thought leadership in relationship to creating "long-term value" for an organization. It can be thought of the overarching efforts of your company to generate revenue and improve your reputation as an industry leader.

John: Talking about S.M.A.R.T goals, have you studied the works by Dr. Edwin A. Locke? He is a pioneer in the goal setting field and organizational leadership.
