Far too many salespeople turn to their boss or company for their personal motivation to be successful in sales. This is a huge mistake, as salespeople need to be responsible for their own motivation if they want to become successful.

A poorly performing Sales Rep who was on "Warning Letter #3" (There is no #4) was completely discouraged. I was acting as a Sales Manager for him and trying to get him back to the success he once enjoyed. After going through every resource possible to help him, I asked him "What can i do to help?" He responded "You should be motivating me!" I was stunned. I said, "my job is to provide an opportunity for you to succeed. You have tremendous earning potential. We have invested a substantial amount in training and support. However, if you need to rely on someone else to motivate you, you are in the wrong field."
He understood and we discussed internal thought and setting goals, real basic stuff. But that statement stunned me.
