In a followup to Tony Johnston's great link here's another video, this one from consultant Robert Nizza at Expert Village, about the process to go through and where to find help when selling a business. Some similar pieces of advice can be seen here but one important point that sticks out for me is Nizza's recommendation that business owners determine their motivation for selling. Though one reason he gives for this is that it prevents the probability that the owner will in the end back out of the deal, there could be other reasons to figure out the motivation for selling. Most importantly, knowing your motivations for selling will help you, your adviser and any potential buyer determine whether a deal is right for you. Another important point here is that while the earlier video Tony shared looks at the process from the business owner's perspective, this video examines selling from the point of view of an expert who advises in the process giving two different angles on the topic.
