Getting the Most Out of Your Reading

One of the areas I've struggled with, is how to get the most out of a good book, in which I'm learning lots of new things that I might be able to apply in my life.

I'm about halfway through my summer reading-list, an old hold-over from summer vacations from school when my mother refused to allow me to stop learning for 3 months. I had to ride to the Mary Meuser Memorial Library on my bike every Monday (about 2 miles) to check out a book. The book report had to be on Mom's desk the next Monday when I rode to get another. No report or sub-par report and I could kiss playing with friends or going fishing goodbye for the week.

I love reading and spend at least an hour a day immersed in a good book. My Mom got me started those many years ago. Funny thing is back then I hated her for it.

Great stuff, Frank.

Believe me, I'm not putting down reading books - but Mark Twain, Abraham Lincoln, and James Russell Lowell all lived before the wonders of the Boob Tube, let alone the internet. They didn't even have a radio to sit in front of (like my recent ancestors). What else was there to do?

Hi Frank, This sounds like a potentially powerful technique, thanks for sharing it on here. I’m a non-fiction reader too, I rarely read books in order or fully, unless the really capture my attention. This may mean I retain less but I’m usually only interested in certain chapters or topics.
