The first time you write a poem, build a website, or ride a bike, you’re going to suck at it.
That truth is so universal that subverting it has become a movie stereotype: the chosen one who knows what to do with a sword the first time he picks it up, for instance. That stereotype, in turn, gets its own special treatment: the stranger who sits down at a poker table, swearing he’s never played before, should never be trusted.
Sure, some of us still get upset with ourselves when we don’t master a new skill the first time around — but we generally know that we’re being a little unreasonable about the whole thing.
