It's the 21st Century Business Revolution! But are there downsides that lurk beneath the surface?

At times the cliques, politics and posturing can seem more like high-school or a frat-house than a business networking venue...

Hi Yoni

Honesty. I like it. I can't wait for the "Selling Your Soul ..." post.

Hi Yoni,

If you think about it cliques have always been around and always will be. I think with social media it just makes it more obvious.

Some people you will have an affinity with and develop the relationship with others I call aquaintances or virtual people and this applies to social media as well as offline.

Love your honesty.

Alas Yoni,

In the end, social media is just that...social. And this, of course, comes with all the positives and negatives the word implies. My experience has been that business is no different. I've had family members in business in very small towns in eastern Pennsylvania, a location I know you are very familiar with, who were always mindful of their social standing and reputation when doing business. On the other hand, I have friends who cannot comprehend Facebook because they lack the understanding of the difference between intimate and casual social boundaries that a public social Website requires. In the end, there is another matter you have not mentioned. We are often judged online as in life by the company we keep. So linking to someone just to return a favor can have far greater impact on your reputation overall in terms of those who respect your judgment. For this reason, as I know many others have said before me, it's probably a bad idea to exchange links as an obligation (except on some occasions) or to be too pressured by what others say. The business people I have known who worried too much about what their neighbors said found it difficult to grow beyond their tiny market, and online, if pleasing one clique confines your business and impacts the judgment of a broader potential community, how is it really helpful to your business or brand?

Shawn,

It is a complicated path that we must navigate. Now get off the computer and get on over to MusicFest, one of the summertime things of E. PA that I miss, especially when I read about it at lehighvalleylive. I'm jealous.

Wow. A very raw and honest assessment. I lelieve you are right in your critique. The microcosm part is right on. It takes all kinds. I have always been the type who prefers a small but close group of friends. I guess online media is the same?

Very thoughtful Yoni. I think we've made a few "real friends," but the remainder are definitely "virtual people."

Dominating some social media sites undoubtedly has to do with being in the online clique of old dogs. Great article again!

Braden and Heidi,

Thanks. Frankness is one of my new themes. It's a philosophical approach to expressing feelings and thoughts and getting things out in the air.
