Giving your brand a voice may be the most important piece of advice here. A lot else springs from this...including doing analysis on how effectively you are communicating with that voice. I guess my question would be about your strategy for deciding on the right voice in the first place. Love to hear your insight on this.

You are right. Knowing your brand direction and analyzing the effectiveness of your actions is the most important lesson here.
To answer your question how I chose my brand voice – I analyzed what works best for me as a customer and a reader, what 'voices' I relate to the most, what 'brands' leave an impact on me and why. Then I tried to incorporate that into my own brand. This is still a work in progress, as I'm still trying out new things and analyzing their impact on my readers.
