Number 3 and number 6 are very important here. Building a large diverse network means looking for people in a variety of fields perhaps beyond your immediate expertise or even your industry. (What are a bunch of marketers going to tweet to each other all day long and how much can they really help each other when all of them have the same aim?) Also, a network of such complexity cannot be built over night, so considerable time must be spent cultivating it.
