In this great guest post from theorist Seth D. Brown on Jeff "Ski" Kinsey's blog, Seth looks at how to avoid spreading yourself thin in the small media department. Instead of worrying about all the applications out there, Seth suggests looking at what each service does for you and avoiding redundancies that consume too much time and return little for the effort. More than this, Seth insists that in the end there is little difference between most of what we do in social media and our behavior in the non-virtual world. Instead of promoting an image or product, Seth suggests being yourself and creating personal relationships that can lead to business relationships.

It is better to concentrate initially on 1 or 2 areas and make sure it is paying off for your business, than being involved superficially on many sites.

- Deep content - for networking
- Short content - for real time conversations
I also approach social media from the content end instead of looking at the tools and the platforms. I think this makes it much easier to determine what you can do on social media that is good web marketing for your business.
