Email was used as early as 1972 and rapidly grew in popularity as household computers became a common feature. But was it the first social media platform?

Personally, I think that email is more of a traditional marketing vehicle than social media. It is true that you can make it more social by embedding links to social platform shares or websites, or do the "social pollination" thing, but really it's more like traditional print. But to answer your question, yes, I think it was at least the precursor to microblogging, because before the advent of Facebook and the like, email had evolved to the point where one could rapidly shoot messages back and forth, between groups, etc.

Now email isn't "cool", but it sure remains important to marketing and communications in general, no matter how unsexy it is nowadays. Good post. And thanks for submitting it to BizSugar!
