These days a lot of businesses have employees that aren’t always based in the same office or even the same area or, lo and behold, the same country. There are also groups of people that may be connected via a common source, for example the writers here on the Corpnet.com blog. As one of the organisers of Blog Awards Ireland, I'm finding the secret groups on facebook so handy, the 3 of us can have discussions at any time of the day or night and if the other 2 aren't online, one of us can leave an update and know it will be responded to at their earliest convenience. I think the length of the updates on our page is probably equal to the average novel at this stage!

On a personal note, they are also great for organising a night out with a group of friends, rather than doing round robin emails or texts.

I find private and secret groups fantastic for the reasons you state here Sian. I also am involved with a few others that are non-professional. In particular a family group, where we are spread all over the world and can share pictures and updates that are only relevant to us (and to keep the pictures private of course) This really helps to enforce connection.
