Social media is not a numbers game, or at least it shouldn't be. You've got to ask yourself if or how you are contributing to the noise that appears in the social media time stream.

Hello Jackie I LOVED those categories you started out the article with. And it's SO true. Don't we worship some online personalities sometimes?

I personally try following either people I have some kind of peer relationship with, those related to my niche and then potential customers. I trust on reciprocity to work and gain followers that way.

I have found in testing a number of accounts that after 4000 followers and 'little' automation the account pretty much get's a life of it's own.

Hi Patricia

There’s always a degree of “fan” behaviour on any platform. Its pretty interesting to watch and gives you insights into human behavior.

So glad you enjoyed the post, thanks for stopping by.

I soooo agree, Jackie.

I unprotected my tweets Monday - and I've spent boat loads of time blocking weirdos & freaks that glom on. Some of the most offensive stuff I see on my page (right under my own photo) are @tweets - from people I didn't follow.

Now I spend time every day checking every @tweet from all the fruitcakes with diarrhea of the tweet button - so many with 10's or 100's of 1,000's of tweets it's ridiculous.

I'm up from following 50 to following 100 now, and I'll bet I've blocked close to 250, maybe 300 idiots - almost all of them @tweeters.

There's one guy whose stream is so full of 'em, all I have to do is check @so-and-so, then check each one (and Their @'s) - it's a freak show. Like I have all day to block???

All I want is to follow people I already know online, and maybe OK a few unknowns that seem OK (after I check them out with a fine tooth comb) - not every tweet-happy nut on the planet!!

Duncan

I can't live with that as a solution, Jackie - the ignoring it part. It's not enough that I get listed tweets from people that matter, its about not having garbage on my page that seems even more important. Something about my name & photo hovering above my page makes it impossible to ignore.

Duncan,

I think you should set yourself up some lists and add only people you want to follow to those lists...then all you have to do is check the lists, nobody else will ever appear in there that you didn't put in and you can ignore the rest.

Time is a precious thing, dont give it away to people that don't deserve it.

One thing's for sure, there's always gonna be another tweet happy nut to take up space where the one you blocked was.

Here's to a happier twitter experience :)
