Though Facebook Places is intended for small and local businesses, top brands have come up with some creative ways to drive brand awareness using the Foursquare-like location and “check in” service.

Broadcasting one's whereabouts seems to me like courting disaster. Anyone who knows me knows how to get in touch w/o me broadcasting it. I'd say it's (sadly) downright dangerous for women traveling alone, and would caution young people (who often feel bullet proof - that it'll never happen to them) that very bad things can indeed happen to anyone. Growing up in the late '50's/early '60's my Mom always took the phone off the hook when the family went out so a potential burglar would get a busy signal & think we were home - on the phone.

Which just reminded me that whenever we got a call & they hung up immediately, my Mom assumed they were burglars checking to see if anyone was home.

I don't "check in" anywhere for privacy reasons. I don't want people knowing where I am all the time or knowing that I'm not home for that matter. So... I never really bothered with Facebook Places. Still really cool stuff to know from a business point-of-view, though.

Thanks for the info, it's something I've never explored.
