I think autocratic and despotic regimes have always spent a great deal of time, effort and resources in spying on their own citizens. Technology and posting in public forums is a dual-edged sword: it makes it easier to spread your word and also easier to have Big-Brother watch.

I'm pretty sure Google will soon become as close to "Big Brother" as anything we've experienced in the U.S. - with the possible exception of J. Edgar Hoover's tenure in the FBI. He had dossiers on everyone, but he didn't have Google's reach into literally everything we do online (a thought which makes my skin crawl).

Duncan,

I have mixed feelings and am very wary. Maybe even paranoid. If these countries become true democracies or something similar I will look back and laugh.

If however they become hardcore radical regimes (example - post-Shah Iran), we might look back on the good old days of these dictators.

Maybe I'm thinking too hard?

Nobody knows What's going to happen - I don't envy the citizens going through such literally radical changes. It's a perilous time - but there's at least the hope of something better.

Monday morning the news had President Assad saying the same things Quadhaffi said February 28th: Me leave office?? Hahahaha!!

1st they crack down - what happens next is in the hands of the people.

It's also big news here that Iran has cut of all financial support for Hamas. Ahmedinejad is VERY upset that Hamas has not been vocally supportive of Assad's regime.
