It must be remembered that the logo is only part of the brand identity and people who want to associate do so because of all aspects. It is a little dangerous to make sweeping statements as they can't by the very nature of being general apply to all brands and customers.

I totally agree about the importance of relationships and the power held by small businesses to form them. Personally, I always feel like the logo is a mask. It deters me from dealing with them. That's probably not entirely fair but it sort of freaks me out a little.
