Well, as much as I would like to say that success is all about knowing the best practices, it is not the case. No doubt steps are important, but steps are just part of a larger picture.

Making connections is definitely about content and quality. It's also about adding to the conversation. This is sometimes hard to do and doing it incorrectly can seem like you're trying to impose. For this reason, it's good to always keep in mind the fact that this is value added for the benefit of someone else not simply for the benefit of making a connection. No one likes to feel used, so be sure you are giving something back not simply trying to get something.
