Of course, it all depends on your business. People always rush to be present on all the social networks at once and they get overwhelmed with all the information even before they get the chance to master at least one of them.
My recommendation would be to start small with one social network, and add a different platform to the marketing mix one step at a time. The obvious choice for many businesses is to start with Facebook. Most of their target audience are already on Facebook, so it makes sense. But sometimes you have better results on Twitter for example. Or if you have a small online store and you have nice pictures with your products, you have to include Pinterest in your strategy. LinkedIn is more beneficial for b2b companies, for example, and Google+ helps you a lot with SEO. As I said, it all depends on the niche you're in.
But as a general rule, you're better off with a mix of at least two social networks: Facebook and Twitter, Pinterest and Instagram goes hand in hand. When you're comfortable with two social networks, you can add another one like Google+ and LinkedIn. If your target audience consists more of teenagers you can consider Snapchat, Vine or Tumbler.
