I know: You feel like you're already taking social media seriously. You're Tweeting and posting, blogging and following. You've got accounts on every site that allows you to share and you've got them all linked together. You're out there and you're social.

Big deal.

Excellent post. Although I think in some circumstances looking at followers can be beneficial. For example if another website mentions my Twitter account and links to it, I have no way of tracking how much traffic is being generated as Twitter doesn't offer analytics, however, if I get 100 new followers within an hour of the link going up and typically only average 20 new followers a day I can infer that the link generated some decent exposure to my account.

I think the biggest mistake when measuring success of anything is not knowing why you use a particular metric.

Some good points here. I see so many people who become obsessed with followers and all the questions around followers - should you follow them, unfollow them, spend a large portion of time "managing" the follows. If only they stepped back and thought a bit more about their strategy, objectives and how to hook up with people.
