What is the main purpose you blog? Perhaps it is to make money. Or it might be to spread information. It might be to change people’s minds or just to rant. Or it could be to have fun. Thanks for the reminder about having fun. Like other things in life, it becomes easier to relax & have fun with blogging the more experience you get and the more comfortable you feel with the basics. I particularly like the idea of breaking out of your "work" focus and commenting on hiking, biking, & other "fun" blogs. Makes you a more well-rounded blogger too!

Yes, I much prefer to comment on anything that suits my fancy. It's more real and it does count. I know I still have to be where my niche is, too, but the two are not mutually exclusive.

I commented on this same article over at Sphinn, but I'll say the same thing here. Blogging should be fun, as should the processes associated with it (commenting etc). If you enjoy giving and receiving feedback, the social potential of a blog is almost endless.

I totally agree - if a blog doesn't reveal its message in an interesting or entertaining way, it can come off a little too pedantic (though, if the latter is done well enough, it can grip my attention). I admire the bloggers on BizSugar for doing their best to keep it interesting for the general public. There are so many fields blogged on here to be expert in, that I doubt if anyone could master them all - Sales, Branding, Marketing, Franchising, Finance, Start-ups, SEO & other Technical issues to name a few. Everyone learns from each other in a free exchange of information - that's what I like about it.

Bloggng can be fun, although if you are not a natural writer it can be a tad difficult at times. One thing in business I have learnt is not take yourself too seriously.

Writing posts is certainly only one part of blogging. There is also a certain amount of SEO involved in good blogging, though this aspect is probably more fun for some than for others. I like the writing and it's one of the things I've probably carried over most intact from my newspaper days. But then blogging is not really the same as newspaper writing at all--though there are similarities. Probably the coolest thing about blogging is having some sense of the creation of a whole, like publishing your own newspaper all within the space of a few hours. It's quite exhilarating.
